RJD-LJP alliance will come into power, says Lalu


Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) president Lalu Prasad said the RJD-LJP alliance would storm to power with two third majority in the Bihar Assembly. He claimed that there was a strong wave in favour of the association.

Lalu Prasad was talking to media in Patna on August 28, 2010 after admitting expelled BSP leader Shyam Lal Kushwaha, ruling JD(U) leaders Ramkrishna Bharati and Rajesh Choupal into his party.

He said another JD(U) leader Veena Sahi had already joined his party and a "number of leaders are to follow the suit."

Patna Police resorted to lathi charge when Bihar Youth Congress activists blocked roads in Patna on August 28, 2010 to enforce its 'Chakka Jam' programme to press for an independent inquiry into alleged irregularities in utilisation of Central funds meant for development of the state. Hundreds of youths, led by party's state youth wing chief Lalan Kumar, brought out a march and tried to disrupt vehicular traffic at Bailey road.

Kisan Swaraj Yatra to reach Bihar on November 22

Kisan Swaraj Yatra which will begin from Sabarmati Ashram in Gujarat on October 2 will reach Bihar in between November 22 to 24. The Yatra will be taken out to make the common people aware of the dangers of genetically modified (GM) foods and seeds. The Yatra will spend three days in Bihar-in Patna, Muzaffarpur and Samastipur.

This was disclosed at a press conference in Patna on August 25, 2010, organized by the Alliance for Sustainable and Holistic Agriculture & GM Free Bihar Movement.

Transporters go on indefinite strike in Bihar


Commercial vehicles including trucks and buses went off roads in Bihar on August 25, 2010 as the Bihar Motor Transport Federation (BMTF) called for an indefinite strike to press for revocation of "draconian" provisions under the 'Damage to Property Act', 1984.

The federation alleged that most of the provisions that were being implemented in Bihar linking it to the Motor Vehicles Act were draconian in nature making transporters, drivers and their commercial vehicles liable for punishment with imprisonment of up to five years.

Banks asked to disburse loans to farmers in drought-hit Bihar

Bihar's Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi asked the banking institutions to show leadership in reaching out to drought-hit farmers of the state with loans. Modi held a meeting with bankers in Patna on August 24, 2010.

He said banks had been found wanting in disbursal of loans, payment of crop insurance and distribution of Kisan Credit Cards (KCCs) to farmers in drought-hit Bihar.

He asked banking institutions to organise camps in the state by September 9 to ensure disbursal of crop loans to needy farmers.

Banks should comply with the state government's target for distribution of 21 lakh KCCs and consumption loan up to Rs. 10,000 to the farmers, he said.
